Writers in Oxford: New Perspectives
6:30 pm, Thu 12th November 2009
Bluestockings, Stranger In the House and How the World Came to Oxford 1869: women enrol at university for the first time and doctors warn that if they study too hard their wombs will wither and die. Jane Robinson, Somerville graduate, mother of two, lecturer and avid book collector, tells the inspiring story of these women pioneers and their successors. "Jane Robinson's gem of a book" (Sunday Times). Jane is joined by Julie Summers and Nikki van der Gaag. Through interviews with wives, sisters and daughters, Julie brings to life the social consequences of WWII—after the men have returned. Nikki’s book tells of refugees settling in Oxford, past and present, and their huge contribution to our society. All three authors are members of Writers in Oxford, Oxford’s society for professional writers

12:00 pm, Sat 5th December 2009
Come and play Kings Cribbage - a family game that cleverly blends together two of our most popular past times, Cribbage and Scrabble. Instead of making up and placing scoring words, you place simple logical card hands with tiles to achieve the highest points. An easy to play numerical scoring game, but also a fun challenge at whatever level you decide to play. It is a game that most people can identify with very quickly, alive with artful and creative possible moves, and any Cribbage buff is immediately hooked into the captive play format.
