Ruth Bussey knows what it means to be in the wrong and to be wronged. She once did something she regrets, and her punishment nearly destroyed her. Now Ruth is rebuilding her life, and has found a love she doesn't believe she deserves: Aidan Seed. Aidan is also troubled by a past he hates to talk about, until one day he decides he must confide in Ruth. He tells her that years ago he killed someone: a woman called Mary Trelease. Ruth is confused. She's certain she's heard the name before, and when she realises why it sounds familiar, her fear and confusion deepen -- because the Mary Trelease that Ruth knows is very much alive ..." Instead of making up and placing scoring words, you place simple logical card hands with tiles to achieve the highest points. An easy to play numerical scoring game, but also a fun challenge at whatever level you decide to play. It is a game that most people can identify with very quickly, alive with artful and creative possible moves, and any Cribbage buff is immediately hooked into the captive play format. SIR IAN BLAIR - POLICING CONTROVERSY
7:00 pm, Wed 16th December 2009
Sir Ian Blair, former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police will be in store at Borders giving a talk and reading extracts from his candid autobiography. This will be followed by a Q&A and a book signing. The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police is often described as the toughest job in the world. He is answerable to three bosses, the Mayor of London, the Home Secretary and the Metropolitan Police Authority, and he has a £3 billion budget to spend, ensuring that he is always at the centre of a political storm, and never out of the news. But more than that, he has to battle with traffic deaths and burglary, knife crime, gun crime, and the really big stuff, like terrorism - wherever it happens in the UK. Ian Blair had been top cop for just four months when the tube and bus bombs of 7 July 2005 hit London in the worst terrorist atrocity in British history. And when 4 suicide bombers tried to kill hundreds more people on 21 July, it was on his beat. So it was the next day when, infamously, the unarmed and innocent Jean de Menezes was shot at Stockwell. Here for the first time is the fly-on-the-wall story of an impossible job; of the background and history of the police and their difficult relationship with us, the public; of the de Menezes case; of fighting terrorism - everywhere in Britain, in cases that never reach the media; of the battle with politicians, and of Blair's forced resignation by Boris Johnson. This should be a memorable evening.
